GDP-compliant cold chain packaging for the pharma sector: what does that mean?
The pharmaceutical sector has the highest demands for cold chain packaging: temperature accuracy within narrow windows, validated performance, and complete documentation. What is a GDP-compliant cold chain packaging and why is it important?
What is GDP?
GDP stands for Good Distribution Practice: the European standard for the distribution of medicines. The guideline describes how pharma products must be transported from manufacturer to end user without compromising their quality, efficacy, or safety. For cold chain packaging, this means three things:
- Validated temperature performance — the packaging must demonstrably maintain the correct temperature under specified conditions
- Temperature monitoring — every shipment must be monitored and the temperature profile documented
- Traceability — what is packed with what, for whom, when, and how it behaved
What distinguishes GDP packaging from ordinary cold chain packaging?
Validation reports
For pharma applications, we provide validation reports documenting the packaging’s performance under various ambient temperatures. For example: "maintained within 2-8 °C for 48 hours at an outside temperature of 25 °C, with 4 PCM elements precooled to 5 °C."
Material consistency
Pharma packages are produced in series with strict tolerance requirements for wall thickness, density, and insulation performance. Our pharma line meets these consistency requirements.
Dataloggers
Every pharma shipment includes a datalogger that records the temperature profile. Upon arrival, the receiver reads the logger—if the temperature deviated at any point, it is traceable.
Which products are suitable?
Our pharma packages typically combine:
- A thermal box or insulation box with VIP panels
- PCM elements (Phase Change Material) precooled to the target temperature
- A calibrated datalogger
- Documentation and shipping instructions
