Sustainable cold chain packaging: the overview for 2026
Sustainable cold chain packaging: the overview for 2026
Sustainability is no longer an option but a requirement. Customers, regulators, and competitors all put pressure on the packaging sector to make environmentally friendly choices. But what are the sustainable alternatives to traditional EPS boxes?
The problem with traditional EPS
EPS (Expanded Polystyrene, also known as styrofoam or tempex) has been the standard for cold chain packaging for decades. The performance is excellent, the price is low. But there are drawbacks:
- Not biodegradable
- Recycling requires specialized processing
- Often made from virgin raw materials
- Negative image among end consumers
- Some countries impose taxes on usage
Sustainable alternatives we supply
1. Honeycomb insulation boxes
100% recyclable cardboard with honeycomb structure. Comparable insulation value to EPS, fully recyclable through regular paper streams.
- FSC-certified cardboard possible
- Completely circular
- Attractive appearance for brands
- Sturdy and stackable
2. EPP cooling boxes (reusable)
EPP (Expanded Polypropylene) is more sustainable than EPS because it can be used repeatedly. Suitable for return systems.
3. Container liners made from recycled materials
For large shipments via sea container or pallet transport: thermal liners made from partially recycled material.
4. Conditioned gel packs (reusable)
Instead of disposable gel packs: choose reusable gel packs that customers can return or reuse through a return system.
Which one do you choose?
| Need | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Maximum sustainable image | Honeycomb + FSC cardboard |
| Return system | EPP + reusable gel packs |
| Budget more important than image | EPS (recyclable via specialized process) |
| Industrial transport | Container liners (recycled) |
