Sustainable choices in cold chain packaging
Packaging is by definition single-use, and cold chain packaging is even more so in practice: after one shipment, a cooler box often ends up in the paper recycling bin or with general waste. Cooled Solutions continuously works on an offering where you can choose the least impactful solution without compromising on temperature performance.
Our sustainable product lines
1. Honeycomb cardboard cooler boxes
Fully recyclable cooler boxes made from FSC-certified cardboard with a honeycomb structure. Comparable insulation performance to EPS boxes for shipments up to 24-48 hours, but fully recyclable in the paper container. For many webshop shipments, this is the best sustainable choice.
2. EPP reusable packaging
EPP boxes last for hundreds of trips and are suitable for return logistics. Especially interesting for meal boxes, B2B distribution, and closed supply chains where empty boxes are returned.
3. Improved EPS (tempex)
EPS has a bad reputation but is actually recyclable — the problem is logistical, not inherent to the material. We work with collection points and provide advice on EPS recycling. EPS also contains more than 98% air, which limits the actual material impact.
4. Plant-based absorbent pads
Our absorbent pads made from cellulose and natural fibers replace synthetic variants for fish and meat shipments.
What we also do
- Dutch production — short transport routes, no overseas import of finished products
- Optimal box sizes — less empty space, less volume, lower CO₂ emissions per shipment
- Packaging advice — we consciously advise choosing the right size instead of overspecifying
- Return acceptance — for some products and larger customers, we facilitate the return of empty packaging
Honestly
Fully CO₂-neutral cold chain packaging does not exist. We are transparent: cold chain packaging causes impact, but the impact of spoiled or discarded products is usually many times greater. Our role is to help you make the right trade-off — sufficient insulation for the shipment, no more than that, and in a material that fits your values and logistical reality.
